Dr. Braitman鈥檚 Alcohol Etiology Treatment & Other Health (ETOH) Behaviors lab examines ways to enhance the reach, efficacy, and cost-effectiveness of existing college drinking interventions. We also explore harm reduction more broadly, including daily process examinations of drinking among college students (e.g., social and environmental factors), as well as other high-risk populations (e.g., noncollege emerging adults, sexual minority women, high-risk families).

Dr. Yang鈥檚 research utilizes multi-modal electrophysiological and neuroimaging techniques to study physiological indicators of workload, identify 鈥渘oncognitive factors鈥 that influence cognitive processes, and develop training programs to reduce human error and improve performance. The current projects include 1) investigating how bodily states influence the processing of visual information; 2) using multimodal neural assessments to monitor operators鈥 performance in realistic settings; and 3) examining attention and interoceptive processes in brain-computer interface.

The health behaviors lab typically looks at substance use factors for adolescents and young adults. We鈥檝e studied alcohol, cannabis, and tobacco products. We examine factors that can predict use or impact intervention efforts.

The Human Cognition Laboratory studies the role of automatic and controlled cognitive processes in judgment formation, decision-making, and problem solving. Masters students conduct experimental laboratory research to investigate of the role of implicit memory and attention in judgment formation, decision-making, and creativity. Members of the laboratory also apply the predictions of cognitive process models to everyday social, educational, policy, and workplace task domains.

Students in my lab work on applied research at the intersection of Industrial-Organizational Psychology and Occupational Health Psychology. Our projects focus on understanding how leadership, work design, organizational culture, employee well-being, and motivation influence individual and organizational performance. Students gain experience designing surveys, collecting and analyzing data, conducting literature reviews, partnering with organizations on real-world research, and presenting findings at professional conferences.

Dr. Hawn鈥檚 program of research integrates multiple modalities to better understand how biological (e.g., genetic) and psychosocial factors interact to influence responses to trauma, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and comorbid conditions (e.g., substance use). Her unique skillset in statistical genetics, peripheral (i.e., measured in blood) biomarkers of disease, and advanced statistical modeling fosters an interdisciplinary approach to research that incorporates multiomic approaches to investigate the downstream health effects of trauma-related comorbidity. The ultimate goal of this work is to identify factors that may predispose individuals to, or buffer against, trauma exposure and subsequent mental and physical health outcomes in order to inform early and integrative intervention efforts.
