The Division of Rheumatology is deeply committed to the academic mission of educating the next generation of physicians. Through a combination of didactic instruction, clinical teaching, and bedside mentorship, our faculty play an active role in shaping learners at all stages of medical training—from foundational preclinical coursework to advanced clinical rotations

Our faculty are engaged in preclinical instruction, introducing students to the principles of immunology, inflammation, and autoimmune disease through integrated organ system modules.

During the clinical clerkship years, students have the opportunity to rotate with the Division on dedicated Rheumatology electives, gaining first-hand experience evaluating and managing patients with complex autoimmune conditions in both outpatient and inpatient settings.

We emphasize critical thinking, patient-centered care, and the development of strong clinical reasoning skills.

Medical Resident Teaching

The Division provides hands-on clinical teaching for:

• Internal Medicine residents
• Family Medicine residents
• Transitional and preliminary year residents from other departments
• Occasionally, residents from outside institutions who seek elective rotations in rheumatology

Teaching is embedded in the daily practice of medicine—through case-based discussions, bedside rounds, joint examination workshops, and direct observation. Our attendings foster a collaborative and inquisitive learning environment where questions are welcomed, and teaching is tailored to the learner’s level of training and interest.

Future Directions

As our Division continues to grow, we are laying the groundwork for the development of an ACGME-accredited Rheumatology Fellowship Program, which will further expand our educational reach and provide advanced specialty training to physicians pursuing careers in academic rheumatology.

We are also committed to integrating innovative teaching methods, including the use of point-of-care ultrasound, AI-supported clinical decision tools, and case-based learning modules to enrich the educational experience and reflect the evolving landscape of rheumatologic care.
